You are not for everyone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the biggest signs of maturity is harnessing those words and acting upon them. In practice, it means a variety of things, like stop contorting yourself to fit in particular spaces where it’s clear you’re not wanted or needed. But it also means looking for the “best tribe” for yourself to be in. <\/strong>One where those around you accept you for who you are, appreciate (but not necessarily fully agree with) your opinions, and will support you and your ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s a dream for many to have a strong social network of people they can confide in for sure, but time and again I see people going about it the wrong way. Sure, building up a friendship takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s hard to say if you’ll get a payoff from it or not. And yes, there’s going to be some rough patches along the way that make it hard to tell whether continuing is worth it or not.<\/p>\n

However, if your circle of friends or your social network has the following qualities, then I would say keep pressing on. Better yet, work to cultivate these kinds of vibes and norms, and that can save you a lot of burnt bridges, possibly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From the colour of one’s skin to their field of expertise, personality, and perspective, diversity really is the spice of life. This doesn’t mean you have to deliberately go out of your way to find people who are polar opposites to you, but you also don’t want people who won’t agree with everything that comes out of your mouth.<\/p>\n

Naturally, it’s going to be difficult to tell what a person is like until you get to know them, but generally ensuring your group of friends has some diversity in ethnicity is a solid starting point for a wide variety of reasons. For one, it allows you a better glimpse into one’s culture and broadens your mind to new horizons.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, diversity in gender is also wise. A lot of men get pulled into the manosphere these days, and part of that comes down to the fact that many have no clue how to talk to women. And they’re convinced by the guru that’s “guiding” them to know how to do that properly\u2014which they often don’t.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, hanging around those of the opposite sex will help you better engage with people overall. From words of encouragement to sympathy and mutual aid, your best tribe is going to be one where people look out for one another as best they can. This doesn’t always mean they’re going to help you no matter what and all the time, but that their help is unconditional.<\/p>\n

At the core of it, this is the kind of help where people aren’t keeping score of how much you “owe them” or whatever. It’s the kind of help that comes from the sheer fact they want to and are invested in your own journey.<\/p>\n

Getting to this point is about cultivating a sense of interest in other people’s lives over time. It’s sharing your passions and yapping about interests and dreams. This extends to having yourself goals and desires in life in the first place as well.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, it’s important to keep the mentality in mind that friendship doesn’t always hinge on who shows up to help or the degree of that assistance. We’re all in different stages of our lives, and certain problems are more demanding than others or affect our ability to help. It’s not necessarily having a larger ego, but rather your best tribe should be able to help you build confidence. Confidence in yourself and your identity. Confidence in how you express yourself. The list goes on.<\/p>\n

In practice, your best tribe shouldn’t be all yes-people who nod and agree with every idea, but their own personalities and the norms in your group ensure people have the capacity to uplift and encourage people to engage with the group. It’s hanging out and feeling welcomed to it and being part of people’s plans. It’s giving people enough space to talk and the opportunity to do so.<\/p>\n

At the core, these come down to norms that can be steered to and enforced in their own ways. It can be asking questions and directing them to someone who hasn’t said much. It can be letting someone say their thoughts first before yours and giving them your permission. What to focus on to grow the best group of people is debatable. Some will choose other qualities over the ones I mentioned, and that’s okay. There’s no perfect or correct way to go about it.<\/p>\n

That being said, I’m of the mind that when people are supported, can freely express themselves, lift others, and enable others to do the same, then everyone wins. Getting to that point is no easy task, as trying to get people to get along can be challenging in their own ways, but as long as people are also working on themselves, then you’re well on your way to forming the best tribe for you.<\/p>\n
