Self-help is an industry that I’ve been passionate about for over a decade now. It comes off the backs of being involved in several network marketing companies, the occasional journalling about my feelings, and so much more. But while there is so much good in the industry that we can see time and time again, it would be ignorant of me to deny that the industry has some problems.<\/p>\n

And some pretty big ones.<\/p>\n

From manipulation tactics to outright bad advice, digging deeper into the industry is like peering into the abyss. You have authority figures who are outside of their field of expertise telling you how to be living your life. They even have the gall to sell an assortment of products so they can finance their next big boat. Over a veneer of being concerned and “sacrificing so much,” the titans of the industry position themselves as saints despite being multi-millionaires.<\/p>\n

But this is only the beginning. As you dig deeper, the more it becomes clear that the industry would much rather treat the symptoms than uproot the problem itself. Meanwhile, smaller voices like mine barely scratch the surface and can be easily dismissed or ignored.<\/p>\n

Even so, I still feel like I should be making attempts. Which is why, a year ago, I wrote a book and published it in July<\/a>.<\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”A Desire To Change Self-Help” _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n

I know it’s pretty ironic to be pointing out problems only to offer up a book. For centuries, self-help gurus have always positioned themselves in this manner with expensive courses, lengthy books, or supplements or products they don’t use as a means to win people over. It is how the system is built after all.<\/p>\n

But in order to change the system, one must be in a position to make those changes in the first place. And in the case of self-help, it should live up to what it imagines <\/em>itself to be. Helpful, navigable, and useful. I see a lot of that on smaller scales with the occasional trend breaking through that can be more useful (like shadow work<\/a>), but nothing more than that.<\/p>\n

To its core, self-help is framed as an individual focus and that we have to suffer alone, even as we gather around and listen to one person talk about their cure.<\/p>\n

Seeing this cycle on repeat, I felt it was necessary to address it in my own weird way. And thus I started working on this book with some core tenants in mind. The most notable being two things…<\/p>\n

Encourage a collective mindset and keeping it as brief as I possibly can.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those tenants proved to be crucial, as they represent a pattern seen throughout the industry these days.<\/p>\n

The number of people in the self-help space who do try to be genuinely helpful and are widely known is slim. People can rave about Mel Robbins or Tony Robbins as much as they like, but it doesn’t feel like they stand by their words too much. Even “great minds” like Andrew Carnegie, who wrote How To Win Friends and Influence People <\/em>didn’t really stand by his words when he dismantled unions<\/a> without a care.<\/p>\n

I thought we were supposed to respect other people’s opinions and be good listeners?<\/a> You know, qualities that are meant to win friends and make you a good person. Where does betrayal fit into all this?<\/p>\n

As time went on, it felt like more rich gurus had lost their way on what it means to be helpful. The more influence and power they gather, the more disconnected they are from the people they are meant to help. And even then, their form of help is often lengthy to an unnecessary degree. It’s to the point that 300 page books could easily be delivered in a series of articles, maybe even one.<\/p>\n

All of it culminates in them bumbling and offering bad advice for some of the simplest things or creating problems out of situations that aren’t necessary. Like offering protein drinks<\/a> to people who, on average, are getting enough protein in a day.<\/a> It’s merely adding more layers and complicating the process when it’s not warranted.<\/p>\n

So instead of dancing around the subject or adding unnecessary layers, my book is focusing on some simple things that can be tackled directly. No universal laws or singular winning strategies that I’m spending several chapters yapping about how effective it is.<\/p>\n

One chapter dedicated to a problem. One chapter to solve it with multiple avenues to start.<\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”Self-Help Should Be Collective” _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n

Beyond that, self-help is commonly rooted in self-individualism. It makes sense; it’s in the name after all. However, it doesn’t have to be total solo work. Even this book I put together wasn’t just a solo job that I did. I hired an editor, which I credited in the book itself, and a lot of my thoughts and experiences stemmed from engaging with other people’s work, reflecting on my own thoughts, and working alongside others.<\/p>\n

The past several years of knowledge culminated in this book, and I owe so many people for putting me on this path.<\/p>\n

The unfortunate thing, though, is that in self-help a lot of that doesn’t get recognized. When we offer advice, we tend to focus on the highlight reel of what worked. We don’t talk about the flaws, the mistakes, or the problems that stem from that.<\/p>\n

Otherwise we offer such random or bad advice as eating organic foods is a secret to becoming a millionaire. Yes, that is something I read before in a book.<\/p>\n

Regardless, though, the sense of togetherness is lacking. At most it’s a relation between you and the guru themselves. Sure they have fans, listeners, or crowds, but it still feels focused on individuals. It has cult-like aspects and gets people individually excited to try something but never talk about it if it fails. The guru never tries to lift everyone up aside from using it as a reason for their work.<\/p>\n

So this book aims to change that, just a little bit.<\/p>\n

In the end, this book was created to spark a conversation about how we can change self-help and to offer up some ideas for individual and collective work. It’s tackling some simple problems like setting goals, finding motivation, navigating the various tricks and tactics self-help gurus use to win you over, and more. I don’t expect it to be perfect or that my strategies are ironclad.<\/p>\n

In fact, because the book is so specific and narrow, I’m probably missing some things.<\/p>\n

But it’s a culmination of my years of experience and observations in this industry that I love and appreciate. I can get behind its principles and intentions, but I think we can do better about living up to those things and creating something grand with this industry.<\/p>\n

And it all starts with a book that’s “not even about self-help.”<\/a><\/p>\n
